How to manually deactivate a PlayStation System

Learn how to manually deactivate your primary PS4 and other PlayStation systems to allow new console activation and avoid activation limits.

Activation links your PlayStation system to your account and allows you to access PlayStation Store purchases. Depending on the content you want to access, there are different activation restrictions:

Games

  • 1 Primary PS4 and 1 temporary PS4 activation
  • 2 PS3s
  • 2 PSPs or PS Vita/TVs

Video

  • 1 Primary PS4 and 1 temporary PS4 activation
  • 1 PS3
  • 2 PSPs or PS Vita/TVs
 
 

How to deactivate a primary PS4

A PS4 that has temporary activation will automatically deactivate when you sign out of PSN. To deactivate a Primary PS4, follow these steps:

  1. On your PS4 system, sign in to the relevant account.
  2. Go to [Settings] > [Account Management] > [Activate as Your Primary PS4].
  3. Select [Deactivate] > [Yes].

Your device is now deactivated and you can activate another PS4 as your primary.

  • Deactivate PlayStation 3

    1. Select your local user account and go to [PlayStation Network] > [Sign-in] > [Account Management].
    2. Go to [System Activation] and highlight 'PS3'.
    3. Select the type of content you want to deactivate for your PlayStation 3 - Game or Video - and press (X button).
    4. Highlight 'Deactivate System' and press (X button).
    5. Your device is now deactivated for the selected content type.
  • Deactivate PS Vita/TV

    1. On your PS Vita system, tap [Settings] on the home screen. Go to [PlayStation Network] > [System Activation].
    2. Select the type of content you no longer want to use on your PS Vita - Games or, Video.
    3. Tap [Dectivate] > [OK].
    4. Your PS Vita is now deactivated for the selected content type.

How do I deactivate a device if I do not have access to it?

If you find that you cannot sign out of a temporary activation or manually deactivate a PlayStation system, you can perform a remote deactivation of all PlayStation devices. This action can only be performed once every six months and should be considered as a last step.
