Information about your Online ID

Learn more about how to choose your Online ID on PlayStation Network.

What is an Online ID?

Your Online ID is the name shown when you play games online and use other online features on PSN. Each Online ID is unique to an account and is permanent.

Account holders are unable to:

  • change an Online ID once it has been created.
  • set up a second account linked to an existing Online ID
  • create a second Online ID linked with an existing account.

How do I choose my Online ID?

Please consider the following when choosing your Online ID:

  • You will not be able to change your Online ID once it has been created.
  • Each Online ID must contain between three and 16 characters, and can consist of letters, numbers, hyphens (-) and underscores (_).
  • You may find that your first few choices of Online ID have been chosen by another user. If this is the case, try altering the Online ID to make it more unique until you find one that’s available.
  • It is recommended that players do not create Online IDs that might personally identify themselves to others. Using any part of your name in an Online ID is a violation of the User Agreement made when setting up an account.
  • Any Online IDs that contain offensive or potentially harmful content will violate the Community Code of Conduct. If an Online ID is deemed offensive, a permanent ban will be placed on the associated account and potentially the system it was created on.

How do I create a new Online ID?

In order to create a new Online ID, a new account is required. It is possible to share downloaded content across two accounts* — as long as both accounts have the same PS4 activated as their primary system. This means that you will still have access to all of your purchased content when using a new Online ID on the same PS4 system. Friends Lists, Trophies and save data, however, cannot be transferred between accounts.

* This option is not available on PS Vita, PS TV or PSP as these systems only allow one local user account.
