Manage storage

You can transfer (copy) data from a PlayStation®4 console or another PlayStation®5 console to your PS5™ console.

Once installed in the PS5 console, M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. This allows you to increase the storage space available to you on your PS5 console. You can freely move games between the PS5 console’s storage, a connected USB extended storage device and the added M.2 SSD storage.

  1. Go to your Game Library, highlight the data you want to move, press the options button, and then select Move Games and Apps.
If you're using both M.2 SSD storage and USB extended storage, go to the Items You Can Move to USB Extended Storage tab.
  2. Select Move

To play your PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage back to your PS5 console storage. To do this, go to your games home and select Game Library. From the Your Collection tab, you can find the games that are only saved on your USB extended storage drive labeled USB Extended Storage. Highlight the game you want to copy back, press the options button, and then select Copy. You can play PS4 games directly from USB extended storage.

When you format a USB drive, any data saved on the drive is erased. Data erased this way cannot be recovered, so be careful and make sure you do not erase important data.

USB drives that you used as USB extended storage on your PS4™ console don’t need to be re-formatted.

  1. Go to your Game Library, highlight the data you want to move, press the options button, and then select Move Games and Apps.
If you're using both M.2 SSD storage and USB extended storage, go to the Movable to USB Extended Storage tab.
  2. Select Move
  • To play your PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage back to your PS5 console storage. To do this, go to your games home and select Game Library. From the Installed tab, you can find the games that are saved on your USB extended storage. Highlight the game you want to copy back, press the options button, and then select Copy to save it to your console storage.

PS5 troubleshooting

Troubleshoot

  1. Connect your PS5™ console directly to your TV/display's HDMI port.
  2. Removing all other audio or video devices may resolve picture or sound issues.
  3. Verify that the TV/display is on the correct channel. Confirm that your TV/display system software is up to date and that the firmware has the latest version. Refer to the manufacturer's user manual for any additional settings that may need to be enabled to support high-resolution signals.
  4. Try using a different HDMI cable.
  5. Try using a different HDMI port.
  1. Go to the home screen and select Settings > Sound.
  2. Select Audio Output and then adjust one of the following settings.
  • Audio output settings
  • TV audio settings
  • AV Amplifier audio settings
  • Compatible headphones settings
  • General audio settings

Your PS5™ console detects the capabilities of your TV and automatically selects the best available resolution. You can change your resolution using the PS5 console video output settings.

  1. Go to Settings > Screen and Video
  2. Select Video Output. From here you can view your Video Output Information or change your video output settings.
  1. Press and hold the power button for three seconds to turn off your PS5 console, then remove all cables and devices from the console.
  2. Place the console on a soft cloth on a flat surface and remove the base.
  3. Position the console so the screw hole for the base is facing you, the PS logo is facedown, and the disc slot is on your left side.
  4. Place your palms near the top corners and grip the edge of the cover. Gently pull the cover up and toward yourself. You may hear a click.
    The cover lifts away.
  5. With the cover removed, look for black rings on the optical drive, including a circle of black plastic film. You can remove this film, or push through it to reach the screw it is covering. (Newer consoles may not have this plastic cover).
  6. Using a #1 Phillips or a cross-hatch screwdriver, turn the screw CLOCKWISE until the full disc is almost completely visible.
  7. Gently remove the disc. Do not forcibly pull the disc from the optical drive.
  8. Replace the bottom cover by positioning it slightly away (about 2cm or 3/4 inch) from the top edge and sliding it back into place.
You hear an audible click when the cover is secured.
  9. Reconnect all cables and turn on the console.

The power indicator on PlayStation®5 consoles and PlayStation®4 consoles shows colors to indicate a status or error.

Additional troubleshooting

  1. Turn off your console by holding the power button for three seconds.
  2. The power indicator blinks for a few moments before turning off.

  5. Connect the controller with the USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.
  1. Restart PS5
Ends Safe Mode and restarts the PS5 console normally.
  2. Change Video Output

  4. Update System Software
Allows you to update the PS5 system software via direct download or a USB storage drive.
  5. Restore Default Settings
Restores the PS5 console to the default factory settings. Restoring default settings won’t delete content on console storage such as games, apps, screenshots, video clips, and saved data.
  6. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database
Select Clear System Software Cache if you’re experiencing system feature issues or performance drops.
Select Rebuild Database to scan the drive and create a new database of all content on the system. This option is useful if you’re experiencing system feature issues or a game icon remains on Home after it has been deleted.

Update system software

To allow auto-downloads and updates, set your console to stay connected to the internet when in rest mode and install update files automatically. Enable automatic downloads and make sure to leave your console in rest mode when not in use.

  1. Go to Settings > System.
  2. Select System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
Update Available appears if a newer version is available.
  3. Select Update System Software to update.

For the best PlayStation experience, make sure your PlayStation®5 console system software is always updated to the latest version.

Troubleshoot system software

Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console. This process is often referred to as a "factory" reset, or "hard" reset.

If your PlayStation® console has been offline for a long time, or a system software update has failed, you may need to update the PlayStation 'firmware' manually in safe mode.
