Boot Loader Installation Procedure

Q.

What type of storage or disc media should I use for the installation?

A.

Any of the following storage or disc media can be used for the installation:

  • USB mass storage device (USB flash drive, USB hard disk, etc.)
  • Memory Stick™ *
  • SD Memory Card *
  • CompactFlash® *
  • CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, BD-R, BD-RE

* A USB card reader (not supplied), or a similar device is required when using a PS3™ system that is not equipped with media slots. Also, these media must be formatted for the FAT file system.

Q.

Do I need a PC for the installation?

A.

Yes. You will need a PC to download the required file and store them on the storage or disc media. At this time, the web browser for the PS3™ system cannot be used to save downloaded content to the desired directory on the media. Therefore, the media for installing the boot loader cannot be prepared without a PC.

Q.

"No applicable install data was found." is displayed.

A.

Please check the following:

  1. Is the boot loader file saved with the following folder/file names on the storage or disc media?
     /PS3/otheros/otheros.bld
  2. Is the media correctly inserted in the PS3™ system?
  3. Is the PS3™ system software version 1.60 or later?

Q.

Do I need to install the boot loader every time I boot the "Other OS"?

A.

No. Once the boot loader is correctly installed, the settings will remain even after you turn off the PS3™ system. Therefore, there is no need to install the boot loader every time. However, this is not the case when the boot loader file installed in the system's boot loader storage area has been damaged by an "Other OS" or by the boot loader itself. In that case, turn on the system power by holding down the power button for about 5 seconds until a beep is heard, and then forcibly boot the PS3™ system software. After "Default System" reverts to PS3™ system software, re-install the boot loader.

Starting an "Other OS"

Q.

I can't find the "Default System" item on the PS3™ system software menu.

A.

The "Default System" menu will not be displayed until the "Other OS" boot loader is correctly installed. Follow the installation procedure provided on this website to complete the boot loader installation.

Q.

I can't go back to the PS3™ system software after using an "Other OS".

A.

The method for switching from an "Other OS" to the PS3™ system software depends on the "Other OS" type. For instructions, contact the "Other OS" provider. Also, when turning on the PS3™ system, holding down the power button for about 5 seconds until a beep is heard will forcibly boot the system software. Note that this causes the display settings (video output connector, screen resolution, etc.) to return to the default settings.

General

Q.

What types of "Other OS" can be installed?

A.

Any system software that is designed to run on the PS3™ system can be installed. We cannot provide specific information about what types of "Other OS" are available because the "Other OS" and boot loader programs are produced and distributed by third parties.

Q.

Can the entire PS3™ system hard disk be used by an "Other OS"?

A.

No. A partition must be maintained on the hard disk for use by the PS3™ system software. Therefore, the "Other OS" cannot use the entire hard disk.

Q.

Can an "Other OS" boot loader be installed without creating a partition for the "Other OS" within the PS3™ system's hard disk?

A.

Yes. However, if the installed boot loader must use the PS3™ system's hard disk, the boot loader may not function as designed. For details, contact the boot loader provider.

Q.

How do I uninstall an "Other OS" or its boot loader?

A.

Contact the provider for instructions on how to uninstall an "Other OS". You cannot uninstall the boot loader of an "Other OS", although it can be overwritten with another boot loader by following the installation instructions on this website.
