Downloading and installing the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system software update will update your PSP® system's operating system to include the latest security patches, settings, features and other items. We encourage you to check this page from time to time for system software updates and to always maintain your system to use the latest version of the system software.

An update to the PSP® system software was released on August 10, 2011. You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 6.60.

 
 

The PSP® system software version 6.60 update includes the following:

Music

To use Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity™ application with system software version 6.60, you must update the application to the latest version.

To download and update the latest version of the Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity™ application:

1. Select  (Music) >  (Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity™).
2. Press the button to open the menu.
3. Select [Version Information] from the menu that is displayed. 
4. Follow the instructions to download and complete the update.

PSN

System software stability during use of some features has been improved.

Notices

  • Do not download or install updates using data other than official update data provided online or on disc media by Sony Computer Entertainment, and do not download or install updates by methods other than those described in the system documentation or on this website. If you download or install update data from another source, by another method, or with a PSP® system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PSP® system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PSP®system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.
  • This update is for PSP® systems purchased in North America. DO NOT update your PSP®system through this website if you purchased your system outside North America. There is no guarantee of proper operation with models sold outside North America.
  • The system software and system software updates installed on your system are subject to a limited license from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Refer to 
    http://www.scei.co.jp/psp-eula for details.
  • If your PSP® system software version is 6.60 (or later), you do not need to perform this update. To check the version of your system software, go to Settings (Settings) > System Settings (System Settings) > [System Information]. The information is shown in the [System Software] field.
  • This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions.
  • To play some software or use some features, you may first need to update the system software.
  • Depending on your PSP® system software version, the screen images and icons that are used on this website may differ from those that appear on your system.
  • To connect to the Internet using your system, you must be within range of a wireless access point (or hotspot) that allows connections to the Internet.
  • Some of the features and functions described in this website are applicable only to specific models of the PSP® system.
    • The 1000 series2000 series, and 2000 series icons indicate features and functions that apply only to PSP-1000/2000/3000 series systems.
    • The PSP®go icon indicates features and functions that apply only to PSP-N1000 series (PSP®go) systems.
    • No icons indicates that the features and functions apply to all models of the PSP® system.

 

You can update your system software by any of the following methods:

System Update »

Required items

  • A PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system with battery pack and AC adaptor
  • 1000 series 2000 series 3000 series Memory Stick Duo™ media with at least 28 MB of free space
    or
    PSP®go System storage with at least 28 MB of free space
  • Internet access using a wireless LAN (Hotspots that require a browser for authentication cannot be used.)
  • Internet service with an ISP (Internet service provider)
  • Network devices, such as a DSL/cable modem and a WLAN access point or a wireless broadband router
  • Settings for the access point (SSID and WEP/WPA keys)

Hints

  • Before performing a system update, you must create network settings for your PSP® system. For details, refer to the instructions for the PSP® system.
  • SSID and WEP/WPA keys are types of wireless network information. This information is generally set in the access point using a PC. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the access point.
  • Turn on the WLAN switch of the PSP® system before starting the download procedure.

If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing to repair or exchange.

Download procedure

  1. Select (System Update) (System Update) under (Settings) (Settings) from the home menu, and then press the button button. 

  2. Select [Update via Internet].

  3. Select a connection, and then press the button button.

    If you have not created and saved a connection, no connections will be displayed. In this case, select "New Connection" and enter the necessary network settings. For details, refer to the instructions for the PSP® system.

  4. Connect to the network.
    When a network connection is established, the system will check whether an update is needed.

  5. Download the update data.

  • Do not remove the AC adaptor during the download.
  • Do not turn off the system or remove the Memory Stick™ media during the download.

If a screen prompting you to update the system software is displayed, you can perform an update. Press the button button. The download will then begin.

Update procedure

Notices

Before starting the update, you must do the following:

  • Fully charge the battery.
  • Connect the AC adaptor to the PSP® system and plug it into an electrical outlet.
  1. Check that the download has completed.
  2. Locate the update data. With the data selected, press the button button to start the update. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update. The version number of the update data is displayed and the update begins.
  3. Confirm that the update was successful.

    After the update has been completed, select [System Settings] under [System Settings](Settings) from the home menu, and then select [System Information]. If the [System Software] field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.

Hint

  • After the update has been successfully completed, you can delete the update data from the Memory Stick™ media.

Update using a PC »

Required items

  • A PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system with battery pack and AC adaptor
  • 1000 series 2000 series 3000 series Memory Stick Duo™ media with at least 28 MB of free space
  • PSP®go Either system storage or Memory Stick Micro™ (M2)™ media, with at least 28 MB of free space
  • Internet access
  • One of the following:
    • 1000 series 2000 series 3000 series A commercially available USB A<-> Mini-B (5-pin) cable
      or
      PSP®go A USB cable with multi-use connector (included with the PSP®go system)
    • A commercially available Memory Stick USB reader/writer*
    • A PC equipped with a Memory Stick slot*

      *Depending on the slot type on the device you use, an adaptor (sold separately) is required.
      - For Memory Stick Duo™ media: Memory Stick Duo Adaptor (model number MSAC-M2; a Sony product sold separately)
      - For Memory Stick Micro™ (M2)™ media: Memory Stick Micro™ (M2)™ Adaptor (model number MSAC-MMDS or MSAC-MSDSP; both Sony products sold separately)

1000 series 2000 series 3000 series Download procedure

  1. Prepare to save the update data on Memory Stick Duo™ media, using one of the following methods:
    • Connect the PSP® system to the PC using the USB cable
    • Connect a commercially available Memory Stick USB reader/writer to the PC
    • Use the Memory Stick slot on the PC
       
  2. Create a folder for the update data on Memory Stick Duo™ media.

    Using your PC, create a folder named "PSP". Within the "PSP" folder, create a folder named "GAME". Within the "GAME" folder, create a folder named "UPDATE". (Folder names must be in all uppercase letters).

  3. Download the update data for the PSP-1000/2000/3000 series and save it in the "UPDATE" folder created in step 2.

You must save the downloaded data as noted in these instructions. If you do not save in the correct location and with the filename shown below, the system will not recognize the update data.

PSP®go Download procedure

  1. Prepare to save the update data on either system storage or Memory Stick Micro™ (M2)™ media, using one of the following methods:
    • Connect the PSP® system to the PC using the USB cable
    • Connect a commercially available Memory Stick USB reader/writer to the PC
    • Use the Memory Stick slot on a PC
  2. Create a folder for the update data on either system storage or Memory Stick™ media. 

    Using your PC, create a folder named "PSP". Within the "PSP" folder, create a folder named "GAME". Within the "GAME" folder, create a folder named "UPDATE". (Folder names must be in all uppercase letters).

  3. Download the update data for the PSP-N1000 (PSP®go) series and save it in the "UPDATE" folder created in step 2.

  • Do not turn off the system or remove the Memory Stick™ media.
  1. If you saved the update data on Memory Stick™ media, insert the Memory Stick™ media containing the update data in the PSP® system.

  2. Start the update data.
    Select either Game Icon (Memory Stick) or System Storage (System Storage) under Game Icon (Game) from the home menu, and then select PSP Update. Press the Controller x Button button to start the update.

  3. Confirm that the update was successful.

    After the update has been completed, select [System Settings] under Setting(Settings) from the home menu, and then select [System Information]. If the [System Software] field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.

    Hint

    After the update has been successfully completed, you can delete the update data from the Memory Stick™ media or from system storage.

    If the following screen is displayed when you attempt to start the update data, the system software in your system is already updated and you do not need to perform an update.

Update using a UMD™ »

If a screen prompting you to update the system software is displayed when you start a UMD™, you must perform an update to start the software title contained on the UMD™. In this case you can update directly from the UMD™.

Notice

The update data contained in software for the PSP® system (UMD™) is the latest version available at the time of the software release. A later version of the update data may be available after the software release. As of January 25, 2011, update data up to version 6.37 is available on a UMD™.

Required items

  • A PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system with battery pack and AC adaptor
  • A UMD™ containing update data* 
    *When you insert a UMD™ containing update data in the system, the following icon is displayed in the home menu under Game Icon (Game).

Update procedure

  1. Insert the UMD™ containing update data in the PSP® system.

  2. Start the update data.
    Select UDM (UMD™) under Game Icon (Game) from the home menu, and then press the Controller x Buttonbutton to start the update. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the update.

  3. Confirm that the update was successful.
    After the update has been completed, select [System Settings] under System Settings (Settings) from the home menu, and then select [System Information]. If the [System Software] field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.
 
*As of November 19, 2009, this method is only available for updates up to version 6.10.
