Latest Version: 2.03

An update to the PlayStation®4 system software was released on December 3rd, 2014. You can use this to update your system software to version 2.03.

A PS4™ system software update is required to use PSN℠ features and some features on your system. Also, by updating the system software of your PS4™ system, you can enjoy various additional features and enhanced security. Always update to the latest version.

About PlayStation®4 system software update version 2.03 (including 2.02, 2.01 and 2.00)

PS4™ system software version 2.02 was released on November 11th, 2014. This version adds or updates the following features.

Main features in system software update 2.03 (including 2.02, 2.01 and 2.00)

New for 2.03:

Operations quality during use of some applications has been improved.

New for 2.02:

System software stability during use of some features has been improved.

New for 2.01:

System software stability has been improved when you turn on the system and when it enters rest mode.

New for 2.00:

  • Players in a party can now use Share Play.
    With Share Play, two players in the same party can share a game screen. The host (the user who initiates Share Play) and the guest (the user who joins Share Play) can play the same game together while watching the same screen, or the guest can take the place of the host and operate the host’s game screen.
    To initiate Share Play, select Share Play (Share Play) from the party screen. Use of some features requires PlayStation®Plus membership.
  • Video clips can now be uploaded to YouTube™.
  • You can now set themes for home screens and function screens for each user. Themes can be downloaded from PlayStation®Store. Select themes in Settings (Settings) > [Themes].
  • You can now play music stored on USB storage devices. Connect a USB storage device containing music files (MP3 or AAC) to the PS4™ system, and then select USB Music Player (USB Music Player) from the content area.

 

Other new or revised features in version 2.00

Share

  • The following features have been added to Live from PlayStation (Live from PlayStation).
    • You can now view broadcasts from the past.
    • Broadcasts can now be filtered by language. With the list of broadcasts displayed, press the OPTIONS button, and then select [Language].
    • You can now follow your favorite channels or broadcasters.
    • Featured (Featured) has been added. You can browse broadcasts such as PlayStation®-recommended broadcasts, broadcasts from Friends, and broadcasts you follow.
    • Games (Games) has been added. Broadcasts for each game are displayed.
    • Twitch™ icons can now be displayed in comments.
  • The following settings have been added to broadcasts. With the Share menu displayed, press the OPTIONS button, and then select [Share Settings] > [Broadcast Settings] > [Advanced Settings].
    • You can now display messages to spectators.
    • You can now include party voice chats in broadcasts. A player’s voice will be included only if the setting to allow the player’s voice to be broadcast is enabled in the party settings.
    • You can now adjust settings such as size, background, and effects of video content from the PlayStation®Camera.
  • When you select [Upload Screenshot] from the Share menu, you can now attach a screenshot to your message.
  • You can now trim your video clips in Capture Gallery (Capture Gallery).

 

Settings

  • You can now set the length of time your controller will charge while your PS4™ system is in rest mode. Set the time in Settings (Settings) > [Power Save Settings] > [Set Functions Available in Rest Mode] > [Supply Power to USB Ports].
  • [View Guide] and [Commands for Voice Operation] have been added to Settings (Settings) > [System] > [Voice Operation Settings]. You can view a list of details and hints about operating the PS4™ system with your voice.
  • [Input Device] and [Output Device] have been added to Settings (Settings) > [Devices] > [Audio Devices]. Also, [Output to Headphones] in Settings (Settings) > [Sound and Screen] > [Audio Output Settings] has moved to Settings (Settings) > [Devices] > [Audio Devices].
  • [Mouse] has been added to Settings (Settings) > [Devices].

 

Other

  • Names of players you may know can now be displayed in areas such as your Friends list or under What’s New. You can set whether to display your real name and profile picture to other players you may know in Settings (Settings) > [PSNSM] > [Privacy Settings] > [Connecting with Friends] > [Players You May Know].
  • You can now search for players by entering their real names in areas such as Friends(Friends). You can set whether to display your real name and profile picture in other players’ search results in Settings (Settings) > [PSNSM] > [Privacy Settings] > [Connecting with Friends] > [Search].
  • You can now record a voice message by pressing the  button in the Messages (Messages) screen.
  • The layout of the Party (Party) screen has been improved.
  • The number of content items displayed in the content area has been changed. Content items that are not displayed can be reviewed in  (Library). You can review all content items in the content area by removing the checkmark from [Limit Number of Content Items on Home Screen] in Share Play (Settings) > [System].
  • PS button (PS button) now appears in some notification messages. You can view details about a message by pressing the PS button when the message is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen.
  • When you connect a new device to your system, you can check the remaining battery charge in the system message that is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen.
  • “Standby Mode” has been renamed “Rest Mode”.

  • Do not download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Computer Entertainment. Do not download or install updates by methods other than those described in the system documentation or on this website. If you download or install update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a system that has been altered or modified in any way, the system might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions can void the system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.
  • Do not install system software soon before or soon after a power outage.
  • Do not turn off your system during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your system to be damaged.
  • You might not be able to use some applications or content without first updating the system software.

The system software of the PS4™ system and system software updates installed on your system are subject to a limited license from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Visit http://www.scei.co.jp/ps4-eula/ for details.

Update Methods

You can update the system software of the PS4™ system by any of the methods described below. To confirm that the update was completed successfully, once update process is completed, go to the function screen and select Settings (Settings) > [System] > [System Information]. If the version number of the system update file you used for updating the system is displayed in the [System Software] field, this means that the update was completed successfully.

Update using the Internet

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Internet connection (wired or wireless)
    Before using the network update feature, you must configure your PS4™ system's network settings. For details, refer to the user's guide for your PS4™ system.

From the function screen, select Settings (Settings) > [System Software Update]. Your system automatically checks over the Internet whether you have the latest version of the system software. If there is an update file for a later version, it is downloaded to the system. When downloading is complete, a notification message is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. From the function screen, select Notification (Notifications) > [Downloads], and then follow the screens to perform the installation.

Update using a disc

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • A disc that contains an update file

When you play a disc that contains a later version of the system software, a screen is displayed to guide you through the update process. Follow the screens to perform the update.

Update using a computer

For the standard update procedure, follow the steps below. Visit here for the procedure to initialize your PS4™ system and perform a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
    * There must be approximately 320 MB of free space.

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
      Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in
      step 1. Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
      Download NowClick to start the download.
    • Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4™ system, and then from the function screen, select Settings (Settings) > [System Software Update].
      Follow the screens to complete the update.
  • If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters.

 

 

Perform a New Installation of the System Software

This procedure is for initializing your PS4™ system and performing a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

  • Be careful when using an update file for reinstallation. All users and all data will be deleted.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
    * There must be approximately 900 MB of free space. 

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
      Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in step 1.
      Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
      Download NowClick to start the download.
    • Turn off the power of your PS4™ system completely.
      Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, touch the power button on the PS4™ system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time).
    • Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4™ system, and then touch the power button for at least 7 seconds.
      The PS4™ system starts in safe mode.
    • Select [Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)].
      Follow the screens to complete the update.
  • If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters.
